The sky is dark and brooding and as lightning flashes angrily and the thunder rumbles ominously, rain is pouring down in thick sheets. As the fat droplets of rain pound down upon the ground a man stands outside in this dreary and menacing weather. He is seemingly oblivious to the storm raging around him and as he stands there still as a statue, the lightning again lights up the sky for a single moment. It is Diego Cortez and he is still dressed in his in-ring attire from his last match. With hair plastered to his head and rainwater running down his face, Diego doesn't seem to be taking the results of his match very well. His usual arrogant demeanor has disappeared and while his face is a mask of stoicism that doesn't quite hide the emotional conflict raging deep down inside him, his eyes are burning brightly with a smoldering fire that is disturbing to look upon. Diego Cortez seems lost in thought as he stares off into nothingness and with hands clenched tightly into white knuckled fists at his side his silence as he stands there is very off putting. It is a silence that hangs heavily in the air and despite the storm around him it is a brooding silence that is louder than a thousand thunderbolts.
Appearing behind her husband Sarah Cortez stands in the cold rain shivering slightly. Watching Diego Cortez's immobile form, Sarah has an almost fearful look on her face. She has seen him like this before after the NCAA handed down its lifetime ban on him and as memories of how he became run through her mind Sarah's lower lip begins to tremble and a solitary tear slips unnoticed down her cheek. She loves her husband but this is not that man. This is a Diego Cortez consumed by the vice grip of competition and being denied what he wants. This is what she has feared would happen coming to life right before her eyes but she has taken vows to to stand by him through better or worse and that's what she will do. Closing her eyes for a moment as she gathers herself together, Sarah Cortez takes a deep breath and pastes a tight lipped smile on her face.
Moving closer to Diego she puts her arms around him and lays her head on his shoulder. Feeling the muscles in his shoulders tense up at her touch Sarah begins to speak to him in a gentle voice as the rain pours down upon the pair of them.
It's ok Diego. It was just a wrestling match. It doesn't mean anything. I don't care if you didn't win. I still love you.
As the thunder rumbles in warning above their heads Diego Cortez closes his eyes as he digs his fingernails deeper into the palms of his hands nearly drawing blood. Why is she doing this right now? The sound of her voice is like nails on a chalkboard to him and he just wants her to leave.
You're going to be a legend in this business Diego and even if you don't win this next match I'll always be here for you.
Turning around with eyes blazing with hatred Diego Cortez shoves Sarah hard to the ground. As Sarah looks up at him with a terrified and shocked expression she tries to scramble backwards away from her husband but in the storm the ground has turned to mud and she can get no purchase in the slippery mess. What has she done? He has done some scary things in the past but he has never laid his hands on her and she has no idea just how far he'll go now. He has crossed a line he never has before and there's no going back. Even after only a few months, the wrestling business has changed her husband and Sarah is more afraid than she even been in her entire life.
As Sarah tries to get away from her husband, Diego Cortez quickly gets on top of her and pins her to the ground with his knees as he sits on her chest. Ignoring her struggling Diego leans down and gets right in her face. With a face that is red with anger, Diego Cortez's voice is livid as he yells at her.
WHAT'S THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN SARAH? IF I DON'T WIN THE NEXT MATCH? WHAT KIND OF DRIVEL IS THAT?
With spittle flying from Diego's lips as he continues to scream, he reaches out and grabs a handful of Sarah's hair. Entwining his hand in it Diego jerks her head closer to him oblivious to her tears and the look of raw fear on her face. Mewling in terror Sarah is making incoherent sounds, trying to plead with her husband but too afraid to be able to form the words.
DO YOU THINK I'M WEAK SARAH? HAVE YOU LOST FAITH IN ME?
Losing all semblance of control, Diego violently slams Sarah's head into the mud. Hearing his wife groan in pain only pisses him off even more. How dare she come out here and say that to him. She comes out here and insults him...what did she think was going to happen? This certainly isn't his fault and the fact that she made him do this only enrages him further. It's lesson time and he just rung Sarah's school bell. With absolutely no sympathy on his face whatsoever, Diego Cortez slaps his wife across her mouth with a vicious backhand. In a venomous voice Diego spits out his words at Sarah as he watches blood trickle from the corner of her mouth.
IM YOUR HUSBAND SARAH. YOURE SUPPOSED TO BE BEHIND ME. YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO SUPPORT ME. NOT YOU THOUGH SARAH. ALL YOU CAN DO IS COME OUT HERE AND RIDE MY ASS. I'M NOT JUST DOING THIS FOR ME SARAH. I'M DOING IT FOR YOU. FOR YOU SARAH. I'M DOING THIS FOR YOU BECAUSE I LOVE YOU AND YOU COME OUT HERE AND TELL ME I'M NOT GOOD ENOUGH. I'M NOT GOOD ENOUGH. I'M NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO WIN AND I'M NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOU.
Lifting his face to the darkened sky Diego Cortez lets out a soul rending howl as the rain furiously pelts his upturned face. Beneath him Sarah Cortez's eyes are wet with tears and heart breaking fear. With her hair plastered to her head and her body covered in mud Sarah has no idea how things have come to this point. All she wanted to do was be here for Diego but now she lies here in the filthy, rain soaked mud with blood trickling from her mouth and no idea how it's gotten this far. Her husband has lost his mind. This business has broken something inside him. The man who used to stroke her hair as she drifted off to sleep, the man who cooked her dinner and then cleaned up afterwards despite being exhausted, the man who used to make love to her so tenderly, the man who has always had time for her and loved her unconditionally...that man is gone. As she stares up at Diego Cortez's snarling face, as she sees the unbridled hatred in his eyes, as she hears the anger in his voice, she feels it happen. It is worse than any physical pain Diego can inflict upon her. It is her heart breaking and with the her heart torn in two, the words come unbidden to her lips. In a soft whisper that is full of emotion, Sarah tries one more time to speak to her husband.
Diego...I'm sorry.
Diego Cortez looks demonesque and his eyes narrow with a furious anger at his wife's words. How dare she think she can make this ok again with a few words. She is the reason for all of this. This is her fault. He has been failing because of her, she is what has been holding him back and now she has the nerve to think I'm sorry will fix it all. He will win this upcoming match. He will show them all how wrong they've been around him. He is the best, he is the greatest and no matter the last few weeks, he will show them all. He will show them all and they will all know he can't be stopped. This is his time and he's going to prove it and if this bitch beneath him doesn't want to stand with him then she can be the first one to learn that lesson. Suddenly with a smile that is so disturbing to look at that even the thunder forgets to rumble, Diego Cortez reaches down and grabs Sarah around the throat with both hands. With the veins on his hands popping out from the pressure he is exherting, Diego Cortez squeezes Sarah's throat cutting off her air and making it impossible for her to draw a breath. With Sarah struggling beneath him, with her face turning red and her feet beating a frightening cacopheny of fear on the ground, Diego leans in close to his wife, reveling in the suffering he is causing.
You will see Sarah, I'm going to win this match. You're not going to stop me from taking what I want...what I deserve. Nobodies going to stop me Sarah. Nobody CAN stop me. Nobody Sarah.
Suddenly blue and red flashing lights pierce the darkness of the storm and as Diego Cortez looks up angrily at the intrusion a dark blue clad form comes flying through the air and with a hard shoulder tackle knocks him off Sarah. As one police officer struggles with a furious Diego Cortez trying to put him in handcuffs, another officer goes to Sarah's side to attend to her and begins trying to give her medical attention. With lightning streaking through the sky and the sound of Sarah crying as she watches Diego Cortez take a taser shot right to the chest, the scene fades out with Diego Cortez being dragged away roughly in handcuffs.
UPDATE
As was announced by an embarrassed management of his previous federation, Diego Cortez was released from his contract following this incident and disappeared leaving behind a traumatized wife and unable to be found....until now.
